Foreigner's Work Permit

The permit required to work in China, applied for by the employer before the work visa (Z) and again after you arrive.

The form is downloaded and submitted on the authority's website.

What this form is for

  • From abroad, the usual route is: work permit notification obtained by the employer, Z visa from the consulate, entry into China, work permit, then a work-type residence permit.
  • Some people already in China may, under conditions, apply for the work permit directly.

Documents to have ready

  • Your valid passport and a passport photo
  • The documents your future employer asks for: contract or job offer, diplomas, proof of experience, etc. (the exact list depends on the local authority)

Where to send it

The employer applies online through the national foreigner's work permit system, and the local foreign experts authority handles the application. The linked page is Shanghai's; the procedure is the same in other cities.

Our tips

  • Always download the latest version from the official site.
  • Keep a copy of what you send, with the date you sent it.

The information on this page is general. If in doubt, the official source prevails.
