ITR-1 (Sahaj) — Income tax return

The simplified income tax return for Indian residents whose income comes mainly from salary, pension, one house property and interest.

The form is downloaded and submitted on the authority's website.

What this form is for

  • File your income and the related tax with the Income Tax Department each year, under either the old or the new tax regime.
  • It is only for residents whose total income is within the set limit (salary, one house property, interest, family pension…). It is not for non-residents, business income, company directors or most capital gains.

Documents to have ready

  • Your PAN (active, ideally linked to your Aadhaar) and your e-Filing portal login
  • Your Form 16 from your employer and your bank interest statements
  • A pre-validated bank account to receive any refund

Where to send it

Online on the Income Tax Department's e-Filing portal, where much of the return is pre-filled, or with the offline utility. The return must then be verified, preferably by e-Verification (Aadhaar OTP, bank…).

Our tips

  • Always download the latest version from the official site.
  • Keep a copy of what you send, with the date you sent it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my return finished once submitted?
No: it still has to be verified. E-Verification is the simplest method; the alternative is to post the signed ITR-V form.
