OCI card (Overseas Citizen of India)

Registration as an Overseas Citizen of India for foreign nationals of Indian origin, giving a lifelong visa for India.

The form is downloaded and submitted on the authority's website.

What this form is for

  • Because India does not allow dual citizenship, the OCI card gives people of Indian origin (and some spouses) a lifelong, multiple-entry visa for any purpose.
  • It exempts you from registering with the FRRO, however long you stay. Some activities (research, journalism, protected areas…) still need special permission.

Documents to have ready

  • Your valid foreign passport
  • Proof of your Indian origin or of your link to an eligible person (previous Indian passport, parents' documents, marriage certificate…)
  • A scanned photo and signature

Where to send it

Apply online at ociservices.gov.in, then present your original documents for verification at the embassy, consulate or office listed for where you live.

Our tips

  • Always download the latest version from the official site.
  • Keep a copy of what you send, with the date you sent it.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to report a move within India?
Yes: an OCI cardholder who normally lives in India must email the relevant FRRO about any change of permanent address or occupation.
